CCTV Regulations by March 2010

MP's are to announce that 17 of the 44 recommendations from the National CCTV Strategy will be implemented by March 2010. So what does this mean from a forensics video point of view? Well dependent on which of the 17 are implemented first, could we start to see better quality images from our public space CCTV systems that are easier to obtain/download? I don't think we are going to see an impact from these recommendations for a number of years purely based on the cost but at least we are heading in the right direction. Read more HERE

Western Digital My Book Studio Edition II 2TB

I recently purchased one of these drives to use as a local backup (after losing a single drive to mechanical problem and so far I have been happy with the little unit.

It's not the most interesting thing in the world but it does it's job well. It's quite, small and was quick and easy to set up. The range of connections is very good and I have been happily digitizing to it from Avid Media Composer using the esata connection.

The RAID gives you that peace of mind that is something does wrong at least you have fighting chance.

The only downsides are the power save function (which can be good and bad thing) that when the drive is not being accessed it goes to sleep and can take a few seconds to come back to life and the lack of esata cable in the box was disappointing but I don't think that is limited to Western Digital.

Forward thinking

I have just been reading about a police department in the US who have asked for additional funding on top of the physical CCTV installation budget in order to purchase forensic video enhancement equipment.

Police Chief Frank Limon said "After I got done with all this scope and getting this out for a consultant to look at, I realized we didn't propose anything for the back end, what to do with all this video footage."

It's great to see that someone has actually thought about what happens to all that recorded footage.

Blog finally completed

It's taken nearly a day but finally I have managed to get the blogger template to integrate into the website. HTML really drives me mad, it's one of those things I can't let go since I know if I spend long enough on it I can fix it.
